    What about my unique situation?

Institutions understand that exceptions may be necessary when no alternative options are available for normal or professional visits—such as when a visitor cannot attend during regular hours or cannot participate by video or phone.

Listed here are the institution subject-matter experts who can assist with requests for normal and professional visits outside of standard visiting days and times. Phone hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (local time), Monday through Friday. Voicemails will be returned within 24 hours, excluding weekends and holidays.

    What about Professional Visits?

Why is DOC reducing visiting days?

DOC is facing serious budget challenges due to lower-than-forecasted revenue. To maintain safe and secure facilities, we must reduce costs—especially overtime for staff. Visiting changes are a substantial way to help manage these costs while prioritizing critical security posts.

    Is this a permanent change?

No. This is intended as a temporary measure. DOC will monitor the impact and reassess as resources allow. Our goal is to restore visiting options when financial and staffing conditions improve.

How will this affect minimum and medium custody facilities?

Minimum custody facilities: Visiting will be limited to weekends only.

Medium custody facilities: Visiting will include two weekdays and weekends. Holiday visiting details are still being finalized.

For current visiting schedules, visit our website: https://www.oregon.gov/doc/visiting.

Why can’t DOC cut costs elsewhere instead of reducing visiting?

DOC has already implemented multiple cost-saving measures across operations. Unfortunately, staffing and overtime costs are among the largest expenses, and reducing visiting days is one of the most effective ways to manage these costs without compromising safety. Reductions in visiting times allows us to continue offering programs, education, recreation, and other necessary activities.

DOC understand the importance of visiting, and we recognize the impact reducing it will have.  However, there are very few options left that allow us to stay within the projected budget.

Will video visiting or other alternatives be expanded?

DOC is exploring options to maintain family connections, including additional tablets to accommodate video visiting. Updates will be shared as soon as decisions are made.

How long will these changes last?

We cannot provide an exact timeline. DOC will continue to review revenue forecasts and staffing needs and will adjust visiting schedules as soon as feasible.

How will I know the visiting schedule for my loved one’s facility?

Always check the DOC Visiting webpage and sign up for real-time visiting alerts.

Does DOC still believe visiting is important?

Absolutely. Visiting supports emotional well-being, strengthens family bonds, and contributes to successful reintegration and public safety. DOC values these benefits and will continue working to expand visiting opportunities when possible.

Which holidays are considered State Holidays?
