Oregon State Penitentiary Tour in Salem, OR
We would like to invite you to take a tour of Oregon State Penitentiary (OSP) on Thursday, July 23rd at 2:00 pm (updated date).
This tour promises to be memorable, with inside views into Oregon’s only multi-custody institution that incorporates a maximum-security area. OSP has been in operation on its current 194-acre campus in the heart of Salem since 1866. Much of the building was added to in the early 1930’s, about the same time that Alcatraz was built. As we tour inside OSP’s 25-foot walls, we will visit housing units, job training areas, classrooms, mental health units, outside recreational yards, the cafeteria, and the infirmary. You’ll get to hear from both staff and adults in custody about their experiences and learn a few facts about OSP’s rich history.
It’s a particularly interesting time to visit OSP, with the Oregon Legislature recently funding a study to determine if DOC should consider renovating or building a new facility to accommodate the needs of its 1,800 adults in custody and 500 DOC staff.
If you would like to join the tour, please reach out to Harvey Mathews or Cassie Passon so we can get you or your staff included.
